GOLDWORK

PRECIOUS METALS

Goldwork is an embroidery technique that uses metal threads and bullions. Although its exact origins are not known, it is thought to have developed in Asia nearly 2,000 years ago, It became hugely popular in the Middle Ages when a style called Opus Anglicanum was developed by the English (see A brief history of fashion embroidery). After the Black Death killed about half the UK population during the 14th century, there was a decline in goldwork embroidery, but the 16th century saw a revival of the technique. Heavily embroidered garments became the usual attire for the rich; the typical gold-coloured embroidery was lavishly used, and thought to signify wealth and status. Since then goldwork has been used in many other settings, most recognizably in military and ceremonial uniforms.

The use of goldwork in high fashion is becoming a popular sight; companies such as Burberry and Dolce & Gabbana have used the technique to create military-inspired pieces.
